Practice any rhythm.

A metronome built to stay out of your way: group any measure any way, subdivide any beat with a tap, chain time signatures, and shape tempo changes with natural curves. Then hit play and focus on your instrument.

Try it

This page is a metronome.

This is Groove Lab's own engine running in your browser, with the app's own sounds. Press play. Tap a pad to accent or mute it. Split any beat into subdivisions, change the meter, switch the kit, pick a theme.

The sequencer

Your whole piece, in one click track.

Real music changes meter. Repeats, tempo curves and count-ins live in the same builder, so you practice the piece instead of fighting the metronome.

Handles mixed meter with ease.
Subdivide any beat independently to create the groove you want.
The sounds

A drum machine that knows strong beats from weak.

Eight sound profiles, from a clean click to funk, disco and EDM kits. The drums understand grouping: set 2+2+3 and the kit plays 2+2+3, with the weight where a drummer would put it. Tap a name to hear it.

The Groove Lab sound sheet on iPhone, with the eight profiles listed and one of the drum kits selected.
The coach

Come up to speed.

The tempo trainer raises the click a few beats per minute every few measures while you play, so a passage climbs to performance tempo on its own. Gap training mutes the click for a few bars at a time and lets you hear whether your time holds through the silence.

The Groove Lab tempo trainer on iPhone: a start tempo, a target tempo, and how much the click speeds up each time round.
In the practice room

Set it, then forget your phone exists.

Groove Lab keeps clicking with the screen locked or your sheet music app in front. Play, pause and change tempo from your headphones or the lock screen. No ads, no account, and it never needs the internet.

For teachers

Send a rhythm.

Share any sequence as a link. Your student taps it and their Groove Lab opens with your exact click: meters, tempos, repeats and all.

The maker

Built for my own practice.

Nick Mahon, with his trombone.

I made Groove Lab after getting frustrated with other metronomes: building a mixed-meter practice track was so tedious it rarely felt worth doing. I wanted one simple enough to reach for even in a short passage with a difficult rhythm, and quick enough to set up the subdivision I want a student to hear, live, in a lesson.
